Jon Lin Chua

Jon Lin Chua 300Born in Singapore, MusicaNova Composition Fellow Jon Lin Chua is currently a student of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY, where she is a double major in composition and music theory.  She is a recipient of the Howard Hanson Scholarship, the Simon Rose Scholarship, and the National Arts Council of Singapore Arts Scholarship (Undergraduate) 2014. In 2015, she also received the Bernard Rogers Memorial Prize for her work Four Songs. Her teachers in composition include American composers David Liptak, Robert Morris, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, and Belgian-Singaporean composer Robert Casteels. She has also participated in a composition masterclass with German composer-pianist Moritz Eggert. In addition, she is currently studying piano performance under the tutelage of American pianist/pedagogue Tony Caramia, and has also received instruction from Vincent Lenti, a long-time member of the Eastman School piano department .

As a composer, she has worked with groups such as the Eastman Chorale, the Southeastern Ensemble for Today’s and Tomorrow’s Sounds (SETTS), the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Guitar Ensemble of the National University of Singapore, and the Zen Ensemble. She has premiered works in festivals such as the National University of Singapore Arts Festival (2012), and the Women in Music Festival (2014). Jon Lin was also invited to present her paper A Collapse of Musical Categories?: A Closer Look at Ethnic Chinese Music within the Chinese Conservatory Tradition Today at the Composition in Asia International Symposium and Festival held at the University of Florida (2015). Prior to pursuing her degree in music, Jon Lin obtained a B.A. (Hons) in philosophy from the National University of Singapore.
