The MusicaNova Orchestra ends its 2016-17 concert season with great music celebrating the mariachi tradition, dating from the instruments the first European invaders of Central and South America brought with them, which were quickly adapted into the distinctive music or the indigenous cultures.  Argentine composer Alberto GInastera based many of his works on folkloric themes.  His piece Estancia (Ranch) is a ballet in one act with colorful orchestration and bold harmonies celebrating the life of the Argentine gaucho on the pampas.  Hupango by José Pablo Moncayo is Mexico’s unofficial second national anthem,” based on a dance called hupango discovered during trip to the villages of Veracruz where he collected folk music melodies.  Louisiana-born Louis Moreau Gottschalk was famed in the 19th Century as the first “pan-American” artist to gain fame in Europe.  A frequent traveler throughout the Americas, his first symphony, Night in the Tropics, was composed in the mountains of the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
