Avanti Future Stars Junior Division winner, pianist Jessica Zhang, who will be the featured soloist in our October orchestra concert, is a 10 year old fifth-grader at BASIS School Chandler. She has studied piano with Fei Xu since age 6. She had been the first prize winner of several piano competitions, including the 2013 Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition and the 2013 Steinway Avanti Future Stars Piano Competition. She was also the winner of the 2012 DVMTA Piano Competition and EVMTA Piano Competition. Besides piano, Jessica takes ballet lessons and art lessons. Her artworks appeared on Asian American Times three times. She has a deep interest on astronomy and does a lot of reading on dark matter and hopes she can contribute to the solution this mystery one day.

Flavia Pajaro-van de Stadt began studying the violin when she was 3 years old and piano when she was 8. She is a member of the Phoenix Youth Symphony, and served as its concertmaster this past spring. She has participated in the Alabama All-State Orchestra Festival since 5th grade and has been a member of the Arizona All-State Orchestra for the past two years. Flavia has spent summers at several music festivals, including Rocky Ridge, in Colorado; Luzerne, in New York; and String Crossings, in Tennessee. She has spent the last three summers studying with Sergiu Schwarz at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine. Flavia has very much enjoyed studying violin for the past two years with Dr. Katherine McLin and piano with Dr. Baruch Meir, both at Arizona State University. Her favorite activities include chamber music, reading, tennis, and playing with her puppy Magellan (“Gelly”). Flavia hopes to pursue a career in music.
